Form

FORM

Form describes objects in three-dimensional space.  All forms have, height, width  and depth.  The world we live in made up almost entirely of forms. As artists, we must have a strong understanding of form and how to create the illusion of form in drawings and paintings.

Just like shapes, forms come in two types: geometric and organic.

Geometric forms have specific names associated with them and are typically man-made.

Organic forms do not have specific names associated with them and are often associated with naturally occurring forms.

When drawing or painting a 2-Dimensional work of art, form is created through shading.  Shading is when the artist uses areas of both light and dark to create the illusion that the object they are trying to represent is 3-dimensional.
