Academics
These are the four main courses that each student takes regularly. (Science, English, Math, Social Studies)
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Language Arts is a regularly scheduled course for 6 th graders taught by the academic teachers. This course covers research skills, Reading in the Content Area, Communication, intensive reading and writing skills.
SUPPLEMENT:
Supplement is a module for all students involved in Band, Orchestra, or MOVAPA. In this module, students who are not in these groups can do an assortment of things such as getting extra help, making up work, working in the Library Media Center, or an extra program or activity that students are involved in or that the team plans. In addition, students can also receive AIS in ELA and Math during this time.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
Physical Education is a required course in all three grade levels. Classes meet every other day and work on a variety of activities, both indoor and out. Parents are asked to provide a T-shirt, shorts, sweat top/bottom, sneakers and socks for class.
UNIFIED ARTS:
This is a regularly scheduled program that includes Art, Technology Education, Family and Consumer Science, and General Music. The sixth and seventh grade program offers skill development and media exploration. The eighth grade program is designed to promote interest expansion, exposure, and skill development.
BAND/ORCHESTRA:
The Band and Orchestra meet in groups for five days a week during the Music Supplement module and/or opposite Physical Education classes. (Concerts are held throughout the year to highlight the various instruments.)
LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE):
French, Italian, and Spanish are offered to seventh and eighth grade students. The language program for all grades concentrates on listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing, and cultural understanding. Foreign language is offered everyday. It is not offered to sixth graders.
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE:
Students are grouped according to similar speech and/or language needs in small groups or on an individual basis. Students are taken from regular classes and meet a minimum of twice a week to a maximum of five times a week, for as long as the need is indicated.
PUPIL PERSONNEL SERVICES:
Available to the students at Blue Mountain are three full-time guidance counselors and a nurse. In addition, two full-time social workers, one school psychologist and a part-time student assistance counselor are available.
ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
AIS MATH:
AIS Math is offered to students who are identified as needing extra support in math. Students are scheduled for AIS Math labs during the school day.
ACCELERATED ART:
Based on the recommendation of the art teachers, selected eighth grade students participate in an accelerated art course for 20 weeks. Students work on studies in drawing and painting techniques, perspective, two dimensional design and art history.
